At our annual membership meeting, which took place during the conference in San Diego, UALE members voted in new leadership and approved a number of measures that will guide our work in upcoming months.
Elissa McBride, Director of Education and Leadership Training for AFSCME, heads up our new Executive Board, which also includes several other new faces.

Sue Schurman, Rutgers, won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the UALE Conference in San Diego this year, and Kent Wong, UCLA, won the award for Outstanding Contribution to the field of Labor Education.
Awards were also given for Best Book, Best Labor Studies Journal Article, and best paper from a student or first-time presenter.

Bruce Kingery, UALE member and long-time labor educator at the UAW National Education Department, has come out with a new book of poetry aimed at a Labor Studies audience.

A new book outlining how unions can help their laid off members, protect those still working, and prevent the gutting of their hard-won contracts – and their very unions themselves – has been written by UALE member Bill Barry and published by Union Communication Services, Inc. (UCS).

UALE is happy to announce the recipients of the five 2009 annual awards. The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Charlie Micallef. The award for Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Labor Education for 2008 went to Judy Ancel. Bill Fletcher and Fernando Gapasin have won the Best Book Award. Jason Albright got the award for Best Article in Labor Studies Journal, and Jason Stanley won the New Generation Award.
